Further Supervisory & Team Leader Development – Remote Delivery

Course Overview:

This is a highly practical course looking at a supervisor’s role as part of the management team. We will concentrate on developing and expanding their current skills.

Overview of Approach:

The workshop comprises two days, comprising five and a half hours of sessions per day, a total of 11 hours. Given the nature of remote delivery, the approach will be to divide the sessions into bite-size chunks to enable delegates to maintain concentration. Requirements to Participate in Remote Training: • An internet connection – broadband wired or wireless (3G or 4G/LTE) • Speakers and a microphone – built-in or USB plug-in or wireless Bluetooth • A webcam or HD webcam - built-in or USB plug-in • Or, a HD cam or HD camcorder with video capture card Course Objectives:

• Distinguished between a leader and a supervisor • Reviewed leadership styles • Understood what constitutes an effective team • Practised dealing with problem behaviour • Reviewed the importance of teams in the workplace • Developed a personal action plan

Course Content:

Day 1:

Session 1. Introductions and learning objectives. Delegates discuss their roles and responsibilities and set key learning objectives. Coach provides overview of the workshop sessions and facilitation. 20 minutes.

Session 2. Essential Qualities of a Good Manager/Leader. Discussion about the key qualities of a good leader. Self-comparison – strengths and development areas. 30 minutes.

Session 3. Situation Leadership. Discussion about Blanchard’s Model. Delegates identify how they lead individuals in their team and create an action plan to implement back at work. 30 minutes.

Break: 15 minutes

Session 4. Motivation. Coach explains Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and delegates discuss how they can apply this to their leadership skills. How can they ensure the model supports them as well as their team members? 20 minutes.

Session 5. Task Management. How to set key tasks for yourself and your team members. Using Situational Leadership principles to plan training and coaching support for team members. How to use tasks to create an effective appraisal process. Delegates create and share a task they are going to set for themselves or a colleague using the STAR process. 45 minutes

Session 6. Time Management. How to prioritise tasks and manage time effectively. Discussion and personal analysis. 20 minutes. Review of morning sessions. 15 minutes

Total time for morning session: 3 hours.

Break for lunch: 1 hour

Day 2:

Session 7. Tuckman’s Theory of Team Development. The model is explained by the coach and discussed with delegates. Delegates identify where their team is and set a plan to either develop or maintain where they are and mitigate against a downturn in performance. 30 minutes

Session 8. Social Styles. How greater self-awareness of our behaviours enables us to more effectively lead the team. Self-analysis exercise. Plan to develop a key relationship through creating better communication. 45 minutes Break: 15 minutes

Session 9. Performance Management. The key principles of effective performance management, including appraisal, learning, development, competencies and values. 45 minutes

Session 10. Reflection and action planning. Delegates reflect on key learning from the day, then create and share their individual action plans. 15 minutes
