Managers Health & Safety Refresher

Course Overview:

This management Health & Safety refresher course is a specifically tailored to company course which is designed to provide continued support to managers in dealing with health and safety issues in the workplace. Specifically, the course aims to:

  • Revise key management responsibilities for supervisors and mangers
  • Update relevant changes in relevant, good practice guidance, legislation and standards

Course Objectives:

By the end of the course the delegates will have reviewed the following key objectives:

·        Key management responsibilities

·        An update on key legislative changes

·        The six core syllabus areas

·        Company specific risk management procedures

·        Company specific accident investigation processes

Course Content:

The six core subject areas will be refreshed using the most current data available to ensure all information is up to date and specific delegate needs will be met as follows:

The importance of managing safety

  • The key moral, legal and financial reasons for managing health and safety will be revised and the changes in accident statistical information discussed with a view towards improved trends across the board

Assessing risks

The following areas will be revised using the latest information and risk scenario based activities:

  • Common definitions of hazard and risk management
  • Types of risk assessment and factors associated with writing them including legislative requirements
  • Samples of simple risk rating systems and company specific risk assessment formats

Controlling risks

  • The controlling of risks will be revised to cover risk control selection and the best methods to choose, including consideration of ‘reasonably practicable’
  • Any risk control systems specific to company will also be discussed here

Understanding your responsibilities

  • Managers health and safety responsibilities will be revised
  • Significant relevant changes in legislation will be discussed
  • Significant changes in health and safety management system good practice and standards will also be covered
  • Environmental management systems and responsibilities will also be revised

Investigating accidents and incidents

The following aspects of accident and incident investigation will be revised:

  • Definitions of accident, incident and near miss
  • The immediate, underlying and root causes of accidents
  • The accident investigation process specific to your company
  • Revision of duties under RIDDOR

Measuring performance

The following aspects of performance measurement will be revised:

  • Importance of measuring performance for improving health and safety
  • Use of key performance indicators and the limitations of reactive and pro-active measuring

·        Purpose and setting up of audits (internal and external)

Course tailoring:

Courses can be tailored to use specific company risk management and accident/incident reporting and investigation formats and can also be tailored to the level of the delegate e.g. previous knowledge at IOSH Managing Safely or NEBOSH certificate level (depending on specific company requirements)
